India has the largest K-12 education system in the world with 260 million children enrolled in schools. Of this, only 64% progress to secondary and higher secondary sections. The biggest reason for this high dropout is low levels of attainment. Among Grade 5 children in rural India, 52.2% cannot read a Grade 2 level text and 74.1% cannot solve a division problem. In Grade 8, the corresponding values are 27% and 56.8% respectively.
The dismal learning levels of the students, to a large extent, can be attributed to classrooms having one-size-fits all approach to teaching. There is no assessment of student learning levels and with this approach students feel disengaged, disinterested and eventually drop out of school.
Class Saathi allows the teachers to conduct quizzes with ease without any additional administrative work. Students use their clickers to respond. Teachers get real-time data on the number of students who responded correctly. This helps the teacher to suggest remedial measures for students who frequently respond incorrectly or to target teaching to suit the needs of the students. With adaptive teaching, there is an improvement in learning and thus students feel engaged. The clickers encourage all students to respond without apprehension as their responses remain anonymous to everyone except the teacher. They can also, at the press of a button, ask for help and the teacher will be notified of this. Anonymity and the fun of using a physical device certainly increase class participation.

Students can be introduced to peer evaluation concept i.e., rate each other’s group work, can assess their peers or evaluate their own learning/performance. The teachers can time each quiz, have the option to blank out the screen (desktop version), or use the attention feature as a support to manage the classroom. The seating arrangement feature suggests seating of students based on the analysis of their performance in quizzes, their attendance and behavior. This feature helps teachers create additional support for students who need it by seating them with the ones who are fast learners.
